Prompt Response

The question that struck me as the most "answerable" was Quarter Rose's question about character: "How are Rawlins and Blevins foils of John Grady Cole?"

Well firstly, Rawlins's brash language and "tough guy" attitude are definite foils for John Grady's compassion and sympathy for others, especially Blevins. Rawlins is also a mediocre cowboy, and as a result John Grady is contrasted as being talented with horses. On the other hand, Blevins is a very talented cowboy, and outshines John Grady as a result. So, Rawlins is a foil to enhance John Grady, but Blevins is a foil to lessen John Grady's abilities, thus putting John Grady as a "happy medium."
